What type of tax reform do you favor?

Posted May 18th, 2010, by Moderator

There is no question that our tax code is broken. 9 Million words and rising! The question is, what is the best plan to fix it?  The following are two good descriptions by Mike Huckabee and Steve Forbes of the FAIR TAX and Flat Tax proposals. What type of tax reform do you favor?

Mike Huckabee – Gives a great interview on the Fair Tax:

Steve Forbes Argues for a Flat Tax

While the flat tax is certainly an improvement on the current system it doesn’t solve many of the problems the FAIR TAX would.

  • FAIR TAX would stimulate consumer spending
  • FAIR TAX makes illegal aliens pay taxes!
  • FAIR TAX  would STOP the IRS & BIG GOV from peering into every aspect of your finances
  • FAIR TAX would lower the coast of goods because manufactures pass along their taxes now anyway.
  • FAIR TAX would keep you from ever paying someone to file your taxes again
  • so many more…

I’ve looked into both of these plans over the past few years. There is one thing certain: our tax code is monstrous, and needs to be totally redone. Because the Fair Tax would require a constitutional amendment, the Flat Tax may be a good incremental step. Even though the Flat Tax could be implemented in a very fair, even-handed manner, it still remains that the existing tax bureaucracy remains intact. That would leave it rife for future tinkering by Washington. The only answer that works for an indefinite period is the Fair Tax. Much too exhaustive to go into here, it would answer all the problems left dangling by a Flat Tax. I agree with Huckabee that to tax at the point of consumption is much more efficient and reasonable than to tax their production.

A flat sales tax….WITH NO EXEMPTIONS…is the way to go. Probably 20-24%.

“No exemptions” means they can’t start making MORE exemptions and start the complexity over again. Hold nothing back on food nor medicine: we’re taxed on all them, now anyway. JUST KEEP IT SIMPLE.

Removing ALL residential and business taxes is the way to go: Congress can no longer diddle with industries with the ever-increasing tax codes, again. So maybe we’ll be able to get’em to stay out of it for a while.

Right now 40% of the households pay no taxes- that’s just not fair.

Tax at point of consumption; the more expensive & non-essential, the more tax. No tax on essential clothing, housing, organic produce/food/drink or income. I know, I know, non-essential & essential will need to be defined. Also, politicking should be a part-time job & no lobbying allowed.

The only answer is the Fair Tax. Instead of paying unfair taxes (i.e. personal income, gift, estate, capital gains, AMT, Social Security, Medicare, self-employment and corporate taxes) all we’ll have to do is pay a consumption tax at the cash register each time we buy new goods and services. With the FairTax, the IRS is phased out and no individual or business is required to file an income or payroll tax return again.

And what happened to the third and fourth more simple options — everybody pays the same percent on every dollar earned. End of story for third option. Fourth option, repeal the 16th Amendment and let the states agree to a certain financial committment to cover what is Constitutionally required of the Feds. See how simple things become when you go back to the source documents for our country?

Flat tax leaves the current tax system in place that won't work . Abolish the 16/th amendment and establish the Fairtax . This will eliminate hidden embedded taxes so that we do not pay taxes on top of taxes . Keep all your income save for a car pay for it in full . Pay 17 % at the time of purchase . In one year you could put enough money aside to pay for a 20 , 000. car in full plus tax . Rather than pay $ 500.00 a month for 5 or 6 yrs . Paying far more than you would have on the Fairtax . There is no tax on necessities like food and clothes . Save your money get rid of credit cards and high interest pay for items in full .

Hands down, “fair tax”. No exemptions, no loopholes, no hidden deals, harder to hide thievery, harder to cheat on taxes. Everyone knows exactly what everyone is paying per item bought.

When you say “a flat sales tax”, that is actually code words for “fair tax” – no exemptions, no loopholes, and eveyone knows what tax everyone pays for what they buy. For instance buy a million dollar yacht and pay $250,000 – $300,000. Buy a $100 boat and pay $125 – $300 tax.

Did you mean to say that you are in favor of the “fair tax”?
